How to look after your skin between appointments
Your treatment day is only part of the picture. What you do in the weeks that follow, and in the weeks between appointments, shapes how your results look, how long they last, and how healthy your skin stays overall. Here is what I tell patients at the clinic.
Start with the basics: cleanse, protect, repeat
A simple routine you actually follow beats an elaborate one you abandon after a fortnight.
Cleanse gently. Use a mild, non-stripping cleanser morning and evening. Skin that feels tight or squeaky after washing has lost some of its natural barrier, and a compromised barrier is more prone to irritation, dryness and breakouts.
Moisturise daily. Hydrated skin looks smoother and plumper, and it copes better with active ingredients. Choose a moisturiser suited to your skin type, lighter for oilier skin and richer for dry.
Wear SPF every day. If you do only one thing, do this. UV exposure is the biggest driver of visible skin ageing, and it can undo the benefits of your treatments. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, apply it generously, and reapply if you are outdoors for long. Cloud cover doesn't stop UV, so this applies in an English autumn too.
Follow your aftercare, especially in the first days
Every treatment has its own aftercare, and it is worth following closely. As a general guide, patients are often advised to avoid intense heat (saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga), strenuous exercise, and heavy alcohol for a short period after certain treatments. After procedures such as microneedling or laser, skin can be more sensitive and needs extra sun protection and a gentler routine while it recovers.
Your practitioner will give you specific guidance for your treatment. If you are unsure about anything, ask us rather than guessing. We would always rather hear from you.
Be thoughtful with active ingredients
Retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C can all be excellent for skin quality, but more is not better. Introducing several new actives at once is a common cause of redness and irritation.
Add one new product at a time and give it a couple of weeks. Build up frequency slowly. Pause strong actives around treatments if advised, and check with us before restarting.
If your skin is stinging, flaking or feeling raw, step back to the basics (cleanser, moisturiser, SPF) until it settles.
Support your skin from the inside
Skincare products can only do so much. A few everyday habits make a real difference:
Sleep. Skin does much of its repair overnight, and poor sleep tends to show up quickly as dullness and puffiness. Hydration and nutrition. A varied diet with plenty of colourful fruit and vegetables, protein and healthy fats supports skin health. Drinking enough water helps too, though it is no substitute for a good moisturiser. Limit smoking and alcohol. Both are linked with dehydrated skin and premature ageing. Manage stress where you can. Stress can aggravate breakouts, sensitivity and conditions such as eczema. Avoid the common between-appointment mistakes
Some habits can quietly work against your results:
Skipping SPF because it is grey or you are "only popping out." Picking or over-exfoliating. Scrubbing harder does not mean better skin, and picking can cause marks and scarring. Chasing trends. Not every viral product suits every skin, and mixing lots of new ingredients can backfire. Booking treatments closely together without guidance. Some treatments need time between sessions for skin to recover and for results to develop.
Know when to get in touch
Some mild redness, tenderness or swelling can be a normal part of healing after treatment. But contact the clinic if you have anything that worries you, such as worsening pain, unusual swelling, or changes that don't seem to be settling. Don't wait for your next appointment to raise it.
Plan ahead with maintenance appointments
Many treatments work best as part of a longer-term plan rather than a one-off. Skin quality treatments, for example, are often more effective when they are spaced sensibly over time, while others need topping up as the results naturally fade. At your consultation, we will talk through what a realistic maintenance schedule looks like for you and your goals, so you are never left guessing about what comes next.
The bottom line
Great skin is built on consistency: gentle cleansing, daily moisturiser and SPF, sensible use of active ingredients, good habits, and a treatment plan tailored to you. Look after your skin between visits and your results will thank you for it.
If you would like personalised advice on your routine, or are due a check-in, we would love to see you at the clinic.
