FAQ

The science bit...

“Botulinum toxin type A” is a purified protein produced by Clostridium Botulinum bacteria which prevents contraction of muscles. Botulinum toxin reduces the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger produced in our nerves to stimulate muscle contraction. Facial lines are caused by repeated use of the facial muscles of expression e.g. squinting and frowning. By reducing the amount of facial muscle movement the lines can be softened. Injections are given into the muscles, temporarily reducing their strength and so reducing the appearance of the lines and also the development of further facial lines. Renervation is a natural process which occurs after 3-4 months meaning that the effect on the muscle is always temporary, and retreatment is required for any long term effect.

Is it for me?

Neurotoxin injections can be used by anyone who is looking to achieve the best version of themselves, but it is most effective in those who wish to soften the appearance of forehead lines, frown lines or wrinkles around their eyes. Neurotoxin injections can be used as a corrective treatment for people with existing or 'static' facial lines and wrinkles. Like all aspects of anti-ageing, prevention is better than cure and many young people are opting for preventive injections in “baby doses” as a way of stopping lines of expression becoming permanent wrinkles. Dr Sabrina always works to prevent/treat wrinkles whilst maintaining some natural expression.

How safe is it?

Your safety is paramount to us and Dr Sabrina only uses products that she would happily use on friends and family. When administered by a medical professional with in depth knowledge of facial anatomy, Neurotoxin injections are a very safe treatment with very few side effects (all of which are temporary). These include mild bruising, swelling, infection and in very rare cases, brow drooping.

What will it do for me?

The treatment takes 4-14 days to take effect: once it has done so, we hope that it will make you feel more confident and radiant. All new clients will be offered a two week post-treatment appointment, a proportion of these will need a top-up to achieve optimum results (of course this will be free of charge). We hope that it will make you feel more confident with a fresher, brighter and more relaxed appearance. Clients should consider this as an effective part of their skincare regimen.

What happens during the procedure?

Dr Sabrina will analyze your personal facial structure and make a series of carefully calculated injections into the muscles of your face with a tiny needle. The injection process itself will only take minutes.

Is it painful?

Most patients report that the injections are pain free, but some experience mild discomfort which at worst can be compared to a wasp sting.

Is there any aftercare?

There is evidence to show that exercising the treated muscles helps the treatment take effect.

  • Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after treatment
  • Avoid rubbing your face for a minimum of 6 hours after treatment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and yoga for 24 hours post treatment
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post treatment
  • Avoid flying for 48 hours
  • Avoid extreme temperatures until redness and swelling subsides
  • No saunas, steam rooms, sun beds or sun exposure
  • Paracetamol is painkiller of choice should you develop any headache or post-treatment discomfort (avoid aspirin and ibuprofen)
